why are white flowers predominant at easter
White flowers are borne in mid-summer, but they are lost in the foliage and not very showy. The flowers are followed by tiny, raspberry-like
fruit in late summer. White flowers are a beautiful to coordinate with the gown and work well for dark-haired brides. The fragrant gardenia is a
favorite for such accents. White flowers are quite popular, but pink flowers are also frequently used.
White flowers are best displayed on the springtime branches of baccata jackii, beverly, bob white, donald wyman, and
snowdrift. All these will reach 20 feet high by 20 feet wide and have a fair resistance to fire blight. White flowers are increasingly
being discovered by interior, and exterior, designers. It is for these people, rather than botanists, that Deni Bown produced her book.
Blooms are smaller than the regular magnolia as well, but still creamy white to yellow in color, and have the same vanilla-lemon
fragrance. Since the branching is more open, light is able to reach the ground allowing other plants to grow below. Blooms from early
December (in the NW) right on through March and beyond and then the foliage remains for the rest of the season. We are going to suggest zone 5
but do think they would work in zone 4 also with some winter protection.
Reddish bark that peels away from the trunk in red paper-thin strips, similar to Manzanita, is the focal point of this tree. Green leaves turn
to brilliant red and yellow to orange in fall. Red flowers in a wheel-like arrangement in summer. It make take up to 15 years to flower from
seed. Red flower colors do not appear in this group, but there now are white-flowered cultivars. The Africans take longer to reach flowering
stage than the French type.
Reddish pink buds open to clusters of white flowers with a strong, spicy fragrance. Foliage is dull-green and slightly fuzzy. Red-necked
pheasant, cottontail rabbit, red fox, and black bear also enjoy the fruit. The tree's dense foliage has the added value of providing protective
shelter.
Attractive flower tassels in spring. Attractive pitchers entice flies to their doom. The unusual flowers are quite
beautiful.
Leaf: Bright green to blue green flat needles; sharp point on end; may discolor in winter to bronze green. Leaf ends are less sharp than those
of the similar Yucca aloifolia, but still advisable to plant this Yucca well back from paths. Leaflets usually have a lighter green or white
'V-shaped' marking close to their base and a slightly toothed margin. Each trifoliate leaf occurs on a 1-3 inch petiole.
Leaflets have prominent veins and the terminal leaflet of each leaf is on a short stem. Hop clover has short, hairy, reclining,
slender stems which are somewhat reddish.
Planting them in full sun increases flowering for this shrub. Fruits are sparse but may be likewise increased by planting other viburnums of
the same species nearby for cross-pollination. Plant with care either in containers or on impoverished sites. Plants will often maintain
themselves by self-sowing, though in cold springs the seed will often not germinate until mid or even late summer, which is too late to produce a
reasonable crop. A very ornamental and free-flowering species, it is often in bloom from early summer until cut down by the autumn frosts.
Planting too deeply can reduce eventual flowering. Plant your moon garden near a window so the evening breeze will carry the fragrance
indoors. A bench for evening observation is a wonderful way to enjoy the aromatic flowers and magical surroundings. Plants flower profusely in
spring and sparsely at other times following rains.
Planted as an ornamental, it suckers freely and will quickly block drains or septic systems. It has formed dense stands in disturbed wetlands
on the Swan Coastal Plain. Plants may grow 4 to 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide. Its pinnately compound leaves are 2 to 3 feet long. Plants
with scented foliage get their smell from water-repellent essential oils manufactured by glandular leaf hairs known as trichomes; the smell's
main job is to repel leaf-eating predators, especially insects.
