lacing and relacing wheel spokes guide
Broken spokes are a common problem on rear wheels. The back wheel takes most of the rider weight and all the torque of power transfer, plus the
rear wheel is dished. Broken Spokes should be replaced, before the additional stress causes others to fail. Replace any broken spoke
immediately.
carbon
Carbon fiber wheels use a totally different, high quality manufacturing process. Carbon rims do not last long with daily use.
mavic
Mavic race wheel rims have a dot impression next to the first spoke to the right of the valve hole. When the dot is to the right of the valve
hole, that is drive side of the rim. Mavic is ok, but look at their high-end double-butted rims - the holes are apparently punched, not drilled,
and if you hold them just right you can see small discolorations where the metal was deformed. This weakens the rim, and just now (9/99) two
spoke sockets were torn from my rim at such points, leaving huge holes.
tightened,tighten
Tighten the nipple just enough to keep everything together. Repeat for the remaining three spokes. Tightening the bolts once everything is
laced would be a dodgy task. Once everything was together I was ready to lace the wheel. Tightening the same-side spoke on each side of the
broken spoke may straighten the rim, reducing wheel-wobble and allowing you to brake effectively on the way home. See the section on wheel truing
.
Tighten all fasteners to the specs given below. Its a good idea to clean the caliper bolt
threads and use thread-locking compound on them. Tighten it a little. Then tighten four or five spokes (#s 2,3,4,5) on each side of that (#1)
spoke.
turn
Turn the wheel so that the valve hole is at the top of the wheel. Since you are now looking at the wheel from the non-freewheel side, the key
spoke will be to the left of the valve hole. Turn the bike upside down and spin the wheel, and apply the brake very slowly until the wheel starts
to hit against the brake. If the brake does not work properly, use a pencil, piece of wood, or whatever, and move it gradually against the
spinning wheel to see where the wheel will stop.
further
Furthermore, the anodizing decreases braking power considerably. You'll be eager for that black stuff to wear off your rim as then your brakes
will start to work again . Further shown is a plurality of pairs of anchor pin aperture 149 located in each of said twisted link lace receiving
notches 148 for securing one end of said twisted link lace 14 to the outer disc 145.
rim,rims
Rims for racing bikes, such as the Mavic Open Pro and Velocity Aerohead, are made for people who use bicycles in races. That's why they're
called racing bikes; because people actually race with them! Rims can dent, bend or even crack, depending on what metal they are made from. While
the bike is on the center stand check the head and wheel bearings by gently pushing and pulling at the tire from side to side.
check
Check for true after a week or two. Never pay for someone to do wheel stuff for you again. Check bottom bracket for wear replace, lube and
tighten as required. If your bottom bracket is old, consider installing a new one.
replace
Replacing the red ring is one of the last things that you do in the spoke replacement process. In Bill's experience, improperly replacing the
red ring and then truing the wheel had led to cracked and damaged spokes, not red retention ring damage. Replacing one factory part with another
factory, that new factory part is still covered under warranty. Replacing one factory part with another make, the rest of the car still covered
under warranty. Replacing broken or worn spokes will make a huge impact on your bike and is easy to do with some simple tools and patience. Read
on to learn how to spoke a dirt bike wheel.
Replacing a broken spoke is an easy repair to make on your own, you just need the same spoke size as the one that broke. You must be careful
to get the same gauge and length spoke. Replacing the brake lever.
