good excuses for calling in sick

Calling in sick is not only sneaky and unethical, it's too risky: Murphy's Law dictates that, as soon as you've done so, you'll run into a colleague at the airport. Calling in sick is not an option. How do you stop playing the game "if I fell asleep right now, I could get 3 hours of sleep" which only puts additional pressure on yourself to get to sleep as fast as possible which in turn keeps you awake?
