Emails were received by Sendmail and stored as standard Linux mbox emails. Open WebMail installed under my Apache was used to get Web-Access to my emails. Email everywhere, rich client access from multiple machines, mobile access, virus/spam filtering and backup taken care of -- best of all worlds. Emails, contacts, images, etc from .NSF files of user accounts are easy to convert.

Email Arrival Notifier notifies of the new e-mail messages arriving from multiple e-mail accounts. It provides you with a system tray notification center that gives you visual and audio notifications once you get the new email message coming from one of your accounts. Messages are saved in independent directories below the user's top-level directory (eg. Directories are called "mailboxes" in IMAP parlance. Message deletion on the message store is a separate action, so copies of messages that you download remain on the server until you manually delete them. This is helpful for archiving or sharing messages. Messages that are flagged as junk mail are displayed only in the Junk folder. The junk mail filter needs to learn which kinds of mail are legitimate and which are not by your training it.

Google offers GMail for domains so you can use your own domain name, and you can access it through a POP3 interface. Google has fixed a problem that Windows Mobile users had with its IMAP implementation for Gmail, which was rolled out in October of 2007. Google has the right idea with their ads- I only wish the other advertising companies would take the hint.

Googler Matt Cutts explains the process: after you install getmail, enable POP email on your Gmail account, and configure getmail to store your messages as mbox or Maildir, then run getmail. Because of a Gmail limitation, getmail will only download 99 messages at a time, so keep re-running getmail and you'll soon have a copy of your entire Gmail archive on your Linux box.

Maildir is a mail storage format. It is used by Courier IMAP and qmail among others, to store users' mail. Mail is stuck in a loop. I think it's trying to copy email to the Trash on my imap server and it times out, then it tries again and again and again and finally crashes and I get the option to quit or relaunch or reset and relaunch. Mailboxes can contain both messages and sub mailboxes.
