Ancient Egyptian is one of the oldest written languages in the world. Different types of writing were used for different purposes throughout Egyptian history. Ancient Egyptian is completely foreign to any other language known to humans. Ancient Egyptian is a thorough and reliable guide to Egyptian and provides an excellent summary of the state of Egyptian linguistics. Those who would like to study Egyptian should begin with one of the good new teaching grammars, but once a basic grounding has been established, this book should be consulted.

Coptic

Coptic should opmore correctly be used to refer to the script rather than the language itself. Even though this script was introduced as far back as the 2nd century BC., it is usually applied to the writing of the Egyptian language from the first century AD. Coptic has somewhat guided modern scholars in the matters of pronunciation of hieroglyphs. This transcendence is a vast topic, which I promise to talk about soon.

linguistic

Linguistics is certainly no exception. I choose here to draw primarily on the work of Antonio Loprieno (see Main Sources below), because it is recent, and therefore has, at least in theory, the benefit of all previous works; and because this happens to be a convenient starting place for me. Linguists just assigned sounds to the hieroglyphics. No one should be able to understand Imhotep's native language, only when he speaks Hebrew.

Hieroglyphs, which previously had been though to express mystic and esoteric knowledge, were now known to express ordinary things, and permitted a more accurate history of Egypt to be written. Archaeology, stimulated by the Egyptian discoveries, added its suppositions and extrapolations derived from physical remains to the stewpot, and modern Egyptology was born. Hieroglyphs surround the base of the statue. Cold cast resin and intricately hand painted.

God allows men to make mistakes and work things out on their own as far as they are able to. The hypocephalus is not a perfect drawing. God told Moses to tell the pharaoh that "I AM" had sent him because "I AM" was the name by which the Egyptians had known Joseph's God. The name the Bible states that was given to Joseph by the pharaoh, "Zaphenath-paneah", has been translated by some to mean, "the God lives; the God speaks".

Textiles and food processing are the most important industries. Textiles, primarily cotton, account for one third of the total output. Text samples date till at least 3100 BC, possibly even earlier. The language was in use until the 15th or 16th century, though in its later incarnation it is usually referred to as Coptic.

latin

Latin, when you're done, you won't actually know the language, but you will have fun learning what you do learn and will have a better sense about it than those who have picked their way through Beowulf with notes. Latin remains the language of the Roman Rite and its use is still encouraged. Large scale papal ceremonies often make use of it.
